Deductible guide

How Hurricane Deductibles Work in Florida

Most confusion comes from one thing: a hurricane deductible may be a percentage of dwelling coverage, not a small flat fee.

The basic formula

Dwelling Coverage x Hurricane Deductible Percentage = Estimated Out-of-Pocket Deductible

Example: $350,000 dwelling coverage x 2% = $7,000 estimated hurricane deductible.

Where to find the numbers

Look for Coverage A or Dwelling Coverage on your homeowners insurance declarations page. Then look for the hurricane deductible percentage, such as 2%, 3%, 5%, or 10%.

Why the calendar year question matters

Florida hurricane deductibles may apply differently depending on policy language, calendar year, insurer rules, named storm status, and prior claims. Always verify your actual policy.
